Nailing jello to the wall

Teaching middle school is like nailing jello to a wall.....

I'm not sure where that originally came from, but an old boss told me that many years ago. It is so true. Middle schoolers are just all over the place. Their brains just skip from thought to thought, activity to activity, and corralling their focus long enough to listen to directions is nearly impossible a lot of days.

Why are they so scattered in their thoughts and actions? Some might argue it's all the hormones and changes going on. I think I will argue it's because they are truly the techno generation.... some of the first to be raised almost solely in a world of video games, cell phones, wi-fi access, and the sound bite. They want everything instantaneously because they are used to everything coming at a face pace. I've heard their brains are just "wired" differently now. Of course, all the raging hormones probably doesn't help.
