So my reading kick lately has been everything vampire. I don't really know why. It's not like I secretly wish to drink blood or sleep in a coffin (they really did in one of the series I finished!). I think it is interesting to compare the different series and see how they treat the myth of the vampire. Twilight has them sparkly while all the other series has the vampire "dead" to the world during the day. It's also amazing the similarities. It makes me think of the old adage that there are no new stories out there which is why Hollywood and the book industry keep rehashing the same stuff over and over. It also makes you wonder how much the author came up with themselves and how much they "borrowed". For example, Twilight uses the term 'dazzle' with what Edward does when he looks at someone. It's implied in other parts of the book that all the Cullens have the same effect. In the Southern Vampire Mysteries, the same thing happens if you look a vampire directly in the eye, but a different term is used. Hmmmmmm..... interesting.
Twilight has wolves.... humans that turn at will into a wolf form later to be revealed as some kind of shape-shifter. SVM also has shape shifters that are called were-panthers, were-rabbits, were-wolves and so on and so forth. Hmmmmm..... very similar.
In Twilight, Edward reads minds, but he can't read Bella's. We find out later it is because she is a shield. SVM has the human Sookie with telepathic abilities, but she can't read a vampire's mind (thankfully or she would have been dinner already!). Hmmmmm.... yet another parallel.
There really isn't anything new after all. What is "new" is how the author re spins the story and tweaks to make it their own. At least in my world, I can count on Bella being what we call a little obsessed (really!) with Edward and Sookie always is in trouble.
